Family Owned and Artfully Made

Michele Chiarlo La Court Riserva

La Court is Michele Chiarlo’s landmark expression of Nizza, made from a three-hectare vineyard in the hills of Castelnuovo Calcea. Here, Barbera takes on remarkable depth and structure while retaining the freshness that defines the variety. Rich, vibrant and beautifully polished, La Court shows just how profound Barbera can become when rooted in an exceptional site.

Alberto Chiarlo introduces La Court 2022

Michele Chiarlo

Michele Chiarlo bottled his first Barolo in 1958, beginning with just a few hectares of vineyards and an ambition to express the very best of Piedmont. Today, the family estate is led by his sons, Stefano and Alberto, who continue the work he began more than six decades ago.

The estate now encompasses more than 110 hectares across Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi, including parcels in some of Piedmont’s most celebrated crus: Cerequio and Cannubi in Barolo, and Asili and Faset in Barbaresco.

Still family owned, Michele Chiarlo has become one of Piedmont’s most recognized names, with a history closely tied to the region’s pursuit of quality and the growing recognition of its individual vineyards.

At La Court, the family’s connection between wine, landscape and art takes physical form. Set among the Barbera vineyards of Castelnuovo Calcea, the estate is home to the Art Park La Court, where contemporary works are integrated into the vineyard landscape. Art is not simply displayed here; it becomes part of the experience of the place, reflecting the Chiarlo family’s belief that wine, culture and landscape are deeply connected.

That same respect for place shapes the family’s approach to the future. Sustainability, biodiversity and the preservation of Piedmont’s landscape are central to their work, both in the vineyard and the winery. Michele Chiarlo was among the first Italian wineries to achieve VIVA certification, reflecting a long-term commitment to protecting the land for the generations that follow.

The Wine

The La Court vineyard lies at 240 metres above sea level, on south and south-southwest facing slopes. Its soils, known as Astiane sands, were formed from ancient marine sediments and combine calcareous clay marl with sand, limestone and a particularly high concentration of magnesium. Yields are deliberately kept very low, concentrating the character of this remarkable site.
La Court is more than a vineyard. Michele Chiarlo conceived the estate as the “Château of Nizza DOCG”, and today its hills are also home to Art Park La Court, where contemporary works sit among the vines in a UNESCO-recognised landscape. Wine, art and nature become part of the same expression of place.

Formulation

100% Barbera

The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in large oak vats, with 15 days of skin contact. The wine is refined for 30 months, including around a year in oak, predominantly large casks with a smaller proportion in barriques, followed by a further 18 months in bottle. The result is depth and texture without losing Barbera’s natural energy and freshness.

Aroma

Generous and intense, with black cherry at its core, followed by darker notes of cocoa and coffee. There is richness to the aromatic profile, but also an elegance and clarity that keeps the wine lifted and expressive.

Palate

Structured yet velvety, with generous fruit balanced by Barbera’s characteristic freshness. The 2022 combines richness with vibrant acidity, giving the wine both immediate harmony and the structure to evolve beautifully with time. The finish is long, smooth and silky.
