Ricasoli

Nine Centuries of Brolio

Ricasoli Castello di Brolio

Castello di Brolio is the flagship expression of the Ricasoli estate, produced only in the finest vintages. Made from a meticulous selection of Sangiovese grown around the castle, it brings together the complexity of Brolio in a wine of depth, elegance and remarkable longevity.

Ricasoli

The story of Ricasoli and Castello di Brolio stretches back to 1141, making it one of the oldest family wine estates in the world. Today, Francesco Ricasoli represents the 32nd generation of the family at Brolio, continuing a relationship with this corner of Chianti Classico that has endured for nearly nine centuries.

Few families are as closely connected to the history of a wine region. In the 19th century, Baron Bettino Ricasoli, statesman and later Prime Minister of Italy, carried out years of research and experimentation at Brolio that led to his documented formula for Chianti wine in 1872.

Today, the estate extends across a remarkable mosaic of vineyards surrounding Castello di Brolio. Differences in altitude, exposure and geology create distinct growing environments, and under Francesco Ricasoli the estate has undertaken extensive research to better understand these individual sites and the character they give to Sangiovese.

That work has helped shape the modern identity of Ricasoli: deeply historic, but never static. From its research into soils and clonal selection to the increasingly precise expression of individual vineyards, Brolio continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in the landscape the Ricasoli family has cared for for generations.

The Wine

The vineyards surrounding Castello di Brolio sit between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, across three of the estate’s defining geological formations: Macigno del Chianti sandstone, Scaglia Toscana, known as galestro, and the limestone-rich Monte Morello, or alberese. Together, they give the wine its distinctive balance of concentration, structure and freshness.

Formulation

100% Sangiovese

The finest Sangiovese grapes are harvested by hand, with each vineyard parcel vinified separately before the final selection is made. The wine then spends 22 months in 500-litre tonneaux, 30% new French oak, followed by a further eight months in bottle. It is an approach that allows the different expressions of Brolio to come together while preserving the character of Sangiovese.

Aroma

Ripe cherry and strawberry lead the way, with a subtle touch of vanilla adding depth. The fruit remains bright and expressive, giving the wine an aromatic character that feels generous yet refined.

Palate

Elegant and juicy, with ripe fruit framed by mature, finely textured tannins. There is concentration and structure, but also a freshness that keeps the wine poised and energetic, carrying through to a long, persistent finish.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese

Goes Well With

Castello di Brolio has the depth for bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast beef and game, while its freshness and elegance make it equally compelling with porcini, rich pasta dishes and mature Tuscan cheeses.
