Nine Centuries of Brolio

Ricasoli Roncicone Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

Roncicone is one of the most distinctive expressions of Sangiovese at Brolio. Grown on ancient marine deposits in the heart of the estate, it combines depth and structure with remarkable freshness. Savoury, vibrant and elegant, it is a wine defined as much by its sense of place as by the character of the grape.

Ricasoli

The story of Ricasoli and Castello di Brolio stretches back to 1141, making it one of the oldest family wine estates in the world. Today, Francesco Ricasoli represents the 32nd generation of the family at Brolio, continuing a relationship with this corner of Chianti Classico that has endured for nearly nine centuries.

Few families are as closely connected to the history of a wine region. In the 19th century, Baron Bettino Ricasoli, statesman and later Prime Minister of Italy, carried out years of research and experimentation at Brolio that led to his documented formula for Chianti wine in 1872.

Today, the estate extends across a remarkable mosaic of vineyards surrounding Castello di Brolio. Differences in altitude, exposure and geology create distinct growing environments, and under Francesco Ricasoli the estate has undertaken extensive research to better understand these individual sites and the character they give to Sangiovese.

That work has helped shape the modern identity of Ricasoli: deeply historic, but never static. From its research into soils and clonal selection to the increasingly precise expression of individual vineyards, Brolio continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in the landscape the Ricasoli family has cared for for generations.

The Wine

At 320 metres above sea level, Roncicone looks southeast across the Brolio estate. Its soils tell a much older story: sand, clay, marine fossils and stones once smoothed by the sea. The 10-hectare vineyard is tended and harvested by hand, with only the finest clusters selected for the wine.

Formulation

100% Sangiovese
The hand-selected Sangiovese undergoes a gentle fermentation and maceration before spending 22 months in 500-litre tonneaux. The approach is deliberately restrained, building texture and complexity while allowing the freshness and mineral character of Roncicone to remain at the forefront.

Aroma

Ripe red berries lead the way, joined by floral notes, spice and a subtle resinous, balsamic character. There is an appealing clarity to the nose, with freshness running through the richer, more savoury notes.

Palate

Structured and vertical, with excellent volume and a distinctly savoury character. Vibrant acidity and finely defined tannins give the wine energy and precision, while the fruit remains generous and juicy. The finish is long and persistent, returning to the red fruit and aromatic notes of the nose.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese
