Rooted in Kamptal, Driven by Curiosity

Loimer Seeberg Riesling

Ried Seeberg is one of Fred Loimer’s distinctive single-vineyard Rieslings from Langenlois. It is a wine shaped as much by its site as by the grape itself, combining ripe stone fruit with tension, freshness and a pronounced mineral character. Powerful yet precise, Seeberg shows the more structured and age-worthy side of Kamptal Riesling.

Loimer

Fred Loimer has built his name on a deep understanding of place and a willingness to question convention. Based in Langenlois in Austria’s Kamptal, the family winery works primarily with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, producing wines that reflect the region’s distinctive combination of vineyards, soils and cool climate.

The historic centre of the estate lies beneath Langenlois, where traditional underground cellars contrast with the striking black winery built above them. That meeting of old and new is characteristic of Loimer: respect for what came before, without being bound by it.

Fred was also an early advocate for biodynamic viticulture in Austria. The vineyards are farmed with a focus on biodiversity, healthy soils and creating a balanced ecosystem rather than simply cultivating grapes. In the cellar, the same philosophy translates into thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking that allows the vineyard and vintage to remain at the forefront.

Today, Loimer is regarded as one of the defining producers of modern Austrian wine, with vineyards across Kamptal and an approach that combines precision with experimentation. From the great Riesling sites around Langenlois to Grüner Veltliner and traditional-method sparkling wines, the common thread is a clear expression of origin and Fred Loimer’s constant curiosity about how that origin can best be expressed.

The Wine

Seeberg lies around 300 metres above sea level, facing south-southwest above Langenlois. Its defining feature is the silvery mica schist that reaches close to the surface, interspersed with amphibolite and covered by weathered, predominantly non-calcareous silty and sandy soils. These rocky, mineral-rich soils give Seeberg its characteristic tension, structure and distinctly savoury edge.

Formulation

100% Riesling

Loimer’s approach to Seeberg has traditionally centred on spontaneous fermentation and extended ageing on the lees, using a combination of neutral vessels rather than new oak as a defining flavour. The aim is not to shape the wine around a particular cellar style, but to give the Riesling time to develop texture and allow the vineyard’s character to emerge. Historical Seeberg vintages show spontaneous fermentation and extended lees ageing as recurring elements of its élevage.

Aroma

Ripe stone fruit sits at the center, with apricot and peach joined by citrus, subtle floral notes and a cooler mineral character. There is richness to the fruit, but also an underlying restraint that gives the wine clarity and definition.

Palate

Structured and concentrated, yet driven by freshness. Ripe peach, apricot and citrus are carried by lively acidity and a distinctly mineral, lightly saline character. There is weight through the mid-palate without heaviness, leading into a long, precise finish. These are also recurring hallmarks of Seeberg across Loimer’s published vintage notes.

Goes Well With

Seeberg has enough depth to move beyond the classic light Riesling pairings. It works beautifully with richer fish and seafood, roast poultry, veal and dishes with aromatic herbs or gentle spice. Loimer describes Seeberg as a particularly strong food wine, with previous vintages recommended alongside fish, seafood and Asian cuisine.
